Riding out time to expertise, saying no is the ultimate productivity hack + more

Every once in a while, I come across a tweet that lives rent-free in my head for months on end, continuously proving itself to be true. Since she posted about it earlier this year, not a day has gone by that I haven’t thought about Amanda Goetz’s thoughts on Time to Expertise (TTE). That’s a lot of days.

Her point is simple: TTE = The amount of time it takes for a skill to become less time intensive because you've built the systems and skills to do the thing in less time. If you start 3-4 projects at once, you don’t allow yourself time to get to TTE, which leads to frustration and lowered motivation to keep going.

The thing is, as multihyphenates, we’re always trying new things and experimenting as we go, figuring out which revenue stream or content stream is going to be “it”, or when we’re going to settle down and focus.

And while this rapid experimentation and our ability to dive into new projects head-first is precisely what makes us who we are, it may also shortchange our ability to develop true expertise from repetition.

Everything when done for the first time is a monster of a project. But as the weeks go by, the muscle becomes stronger, the time becomes leaner. You get in the reps and you see TTE playing out before your eyes.

So maybe the art to this whole multihyphenate thing is being able to experiment and try with near-reckless abandon, and the science is knowing you have to get to TTE before you jump and move on to the next thing. You have to show up week after week. Focus more. Master it, then move on to the next experiment.

Something to ponder or try on for size ❤️
