Shut down routines between side projects, how to price work for new clients, + more

Multihyphenates by definition have a lot of plates spinning - whether you’re a full-on solopreneur with a few sources of revenue, or you have a day job alongside a side hustle, context and role switching are parts of your daily life. And they’re exhausting. We expect to be able to jump from one thing to another, but in reality our brains need much more time to catch up.

If you just got off of a call, for example, it takes an average of 23 minutes to get back into work-mode.

Switching between roles and income streams is no different, of course.

But as a multihyphenate with only 24 hours in the day, we have no time to waste, right? Right?

I’ve heard of some great transition rituals from members in BCM Club - things like light a candle when you’re working on your side project, paint the room where you do work a drastically different color from the rest of your house, or whispering a transition mantra to yourself.

I love Cal Newport’s shutdown routine - at the completion of working on a particular income stream, look over your calendar and tasks and check in on where you stand on major projects. After taking in all this information, come up with a smart plan for the next time you work on it. Then say a quick matra officially shutting down the work (in his case, the mantra is “schedule shutdown complete”).

This simple but brilliant routine not only signifies a close to what you’re shutting down, it also gets the future re-start of that same project or work-flow queued up. It allows your brain to leave the previous task (or in our case, income stream), because you’ve fully tied up the loose ends.

Something to try on for size next time you’re shuffling between the many sides of yourself ❤️
