Setting new money goals, negotiating your prices, + more

We’re pretty hell-bent on talking about money openly and frankly with the safety of the DiscoLink Club private Discord server - we set money goals openly, and we share wins (and losses) openly as well. We’ve seen this make more money for members time and time again.

We’re pretty hell-bent on talking about money openly and frankly within the safety of the DiscoLink Club private Discord server - we set money goals openly, and we share wins (and losses) openly as well. We’ve seen this make more money for members time and time again.

One of my favorite exercises that Coach Ryan encourages members to do is to think about new money goals, instead of a larger-picture money goal. Of course, the larger picture money goal is important, too, but there’s something fascinating that happens when you put new money into its own category.

There’s no way new money can be too small or too trivial. It’s literally the equivalent of finding a $20 bill in an old coat. Thinking about new money focuses the attention on the future, instead of the calculus of the total money that we need to live off of to cover expenses, etc.

It also makes making the new money fun - it’s like a little side challenge to yourself.

And while money isn’t the key to happiness, it certainly does solve a lot of problems, the biggest one being motivation. Seeing new dollars coming in is a strong drug, and it starts to create a mighty little flywheel that gets stronger and stronger with each turn.

Try it on for size: try making a new money goal for the month ahead, no amount is too small! And see if you can ride the high of that new money motivation to learn a few skills and get the money-making-flywheel going.

Let me know how it goes ❤️

Coming up: AMA with Nadia Odunayo on “how I bootstrapped my side project to a profitable startup with nearly 3M registered users.”

On Tuesday, September 17 at 9 AM PT/12 PM ET/4 PM UTC, Nadia Odunayo will be diving into how she bootstrapped her side project to a profitable startup.

Nadia is a developer, speaker, avid reader, and founder of The StoryGraph, the number one competitor to Goodreads. In a few short years, she took her coding skills and her love of reading and built her book-based side project into a profitable, fully bootstrapped company.

She shares how she did it, with plenty of stories, lessons learned, and advice on how you can take your own side project and build it into something more.

Topics we’ll cover:

  • How she came up with the idea

  • The importance of user interviews

  • Personal runway and funding your projects

  • Viral moments

  • Growing a community around your project

  • Coding as a one-woman dev team

  • Wearing multiple hats

  • Product-led growth and marketing

  • Pros and cons of bootstrapping

  • Good and bad luck

Tune in and come to this AMA with all your burning questions. If you’ve got a side project, or maybe just an idea, and you want to know how you might build it into something more, this is for you. You’ll leave inspired, informed, and ready to get to work.

This AMA will be hosted by DiscoLink and is free and open to the public.

Nadia Odunayo will also be hosting a Masterclass for our community, DiscoLink Club, this month. Masterclasses are free for our members - check our discord for your code.
