After the AMA with Scott Hanselman this Tuesday, we stayed on afterwards to chat about the upcoming Masterclass, and I was struck by something he said that’s so simple, yet couldn’t be more true. 

The only way out of the nagging discomfort of “not knowing” or learning something new is practice. 

That’s it. That’s the hack. 

There’s a million different ways to say this (I personally love two mice in a bucket of cream story and the lobster story most of all). But somehow, when we’re in that moment of discomfort we instantly forget this solution and instead focus on pathologizing or removing the discomfort, as if it’s a blocker or a sign that something is terribly off. 

Scott’s reminder is a simple one that can’t be repeated enough: practice your way through it and out of it. 

Creating a new kind of content? Make 100 of it. Yes, even if you only have one subscriber and it’s your mom. 

Setting up your video set up for a new course you’re teaching and nervous about getting the screensharing set up just right? Set a timer and practice the transitions for an hour straight. 

It’s so simple it almost feels silly to type out, but I know we all need this reminder, so I think it’s worth repeating: if it feels uncomfortable, there’s a big chance it may just need more practice ❤️
