It’s not as simple as deciding to take the road not taken, stop trying to wash yesterday’s dirty dishes, + more

As a professional with multiple income streams, you’ve surely made a diversion in routing from what is generally considered the golden pathway to success: work up the ladder at your 9-5 -> become C-suite -> retire on a bed of money.

You’ve got a lot going on, so we’re giving you something shorter to read. Our newsletter will now contain:

  • a short, thoughtful piece pertaining to multihyphenates

  • five links worth clicking

That’s it. Let us know if you like this format better or if you’d prefer our OG version!

As a professional with multiple income streams, you’ve surely made a diversion in routing from what is generally considered the golden pathway to success: work up the ladder at your 9-5 -> become C-suite -> retire on a bed of money.

But it’s not exactly as simple and as rosy as the famous Robert Frost poem about taking The Road Not Taken. It’s not at all binary, and sometimes even when you’re on your path, you feel like you’re so lost and so far off track that you’re entirely lost in the woods. It can be frustrating, maddening, and also lonely.

In a conversation with a mutlihyphenates in BCM Club last week, I was introduced to the perfect actually useful metaphor to replace the Robert Frost poem: sailing.

When you sail, you set out for a destination. But sailing is entirely dependent on the environment, and when the wind isn’t blowing in the right direction, or a storm rolls in, you have to adjust your sails and change course. Even though your destination remains unchanged. You need to configure and reconfigure time and time again to make progress to your destination. And a lot of times, this feels like zig zagging.

It’s not a single, linear, straight path that you set out on like Robert Frost says; rather, it’s a path that multihyphenates with multiple income streams are always adjusting, tweaking and maneuvering around.

I’m sharing this here with you because since hearing this sailing reference last week, I find myself coming back to it time and time again, and I take so much comfort in it - so I figure it’ll likely be helpful to others as well ❤️

NEXT WEEK: AMA w/ Scott Hanselman

We are so excited to announce our upcoming AMA with developer, educator, speaker, podcaster and so much more, Scott Hanselman.

Scott has been building and creating on the internet for decades, but what’s impressive about his incredible repository of tech content is that he’s managed to consistently create quality work, evolving as platforms evolve, and doing it alongside a day job as VP of Community at Microsoft. He’s created so much all while staying on top of his field.

We’re going to dig into all of that and more on Tues, July 30 at 9AM PT/12PM ET/4 PM UTC in a livestreamed AMA.

So if you want to learn how Scott does it all, tune in and submit your questions. Everything’s on the table.

This event is free and open to the public; feel free to share with anyone who you think would enjoy it.
