Accepting the irrational as rational, the priority matrix, + more

Most of us in DiscoLink Club are very data-driven, analytical people who come from the tech world. We’re used to justifying our actions and thinking by actual numbers, and acting accordingly.

Most of us in DiscoLink Club are very data-driven, analytical people who come from the tech world. We’re used to justifying our actions and thinking by actual numbers, and acting accordingly.

But sometimes, the data drives us crazy. Is the conversion rate on the recent launch good? What does [enter competitor] have? But nothing is really ever a true apples-to-apples comparison. And accounting for the noise and outliers sometimes makes our perfect data sets totally worthless.

My antidote to spiraling about data and numbers is one man: Rory Sutherland. His book, Alchemy, reshuffles my brain every time I read it. And his recent interview with Lenny, while long and winding and maybe not entirely worth 1.5 hours of your time, serves a powerful message and a reminder about magic.

The opposite of a good answer can also be a good answer. Our minds are used to thinking about “right answer” and “wrong answer” because we grew up taking multiple choice tests with 1 correct answer and 3 wrong ones.

But what we’re doing out here, building multiple streams of income, multiple side projects, there’s no right or wrong answers here. Instead, there’s magic. Three answers can be equally right.

While Rory’s evangelizing can sometimes be infuriating (knowing and choosing the right answer is such a thrill!), I find it to be the perfect get-out-of-your-stuck-thinking antidote.

It doesn’t make me adore data or making decisions about conversion rates any less, it just gives my brain more space to see beyond the numbers  ❤️
