Perfectionism is a defense mechanism, hot leads for Big Cash Money + more

Last week I was all in my feelings about how to be good at launching things, and why we get stuck before the starting line.  One thing I hadn’t originally considered as a culprit is perfectionism. Or rather, what hides as perfectionism.

Last week I was all in my feelings about how to be good at launching things, and why we get stuck before the starting line.

One thing I hadn’t originally considered as a culprit is perfectionism. Or rather, what hides as perfectionism.

Brene Brown, as always, offers a spot-on take: perfectionism is a defense mechanism. It tries to defend us by saying “If you look perfect, do perfect, and accomplish perfect, you can avoid or minimize shame and judgment and blame”. Therefore, by never launching, you don’t risk experiencing the shame and judgment of not being good enough.

It’s not at all about striving for excellence, it’s how we self-protect.

When we get that it-has-to-be-perfect feeling, she suggests cutting to the chase and asking “What am I afraid of”?

So one thing to think about the next time you’ve started but haven’t launched is: is there something I’m afraid of? And seeing how you can tackle that fear head-on.

Just food for thought ❤️
